Santander and Visa Launch AI-Agent Payments Pilot as Latin America Embraces Intelligent Commerce

A new milestone in the evolution of digital payments has emerged as Banco Santander and Visa announced the launch of Latin America's first end-to-end payments system powered by AI agents. The initiative demonstrates how artificial intelligence can complete entire transactions — from identifying products to executing payments — within a secure banking framework.

The pilot program was conducted across five Latin American markets — Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Uruguay, where AI agents successfully carried out transactions through Santander's payment infrastructure using Visa's global network.

The collaboration marks one of the clearest examples yet of "agentic commerce," an emerging model where autonomous AI systems can search, compare and complete purchases on behalf of users based on predefined preferences.

AI Agents That Can Complete Payments

In the pilot, AI agents were able to carry out a full purchasing workflow, including selecting products and initiating payment — all within limits and permissions set by the user.

Instead of simply recommending options, the system can execute the transaction itself, connecting merchants, payment networks and banking systems in real time.

The model reflects a growing shift toward autonomous financial assistants, where software agents act on behalf of individuals or businesses to complete tasks that previously required manual interaction.

Santander said the initiative demonstrates how AI can move beyond insights and recommendations to securely executing real financial actions.

Latin America Emerging as a Key AI Commerce Market

The experiment comes as consumer behavior in Latin America is rapidly evolving toward AI-assisted shopping and digital payments.

According to a recent Visa study of regional shoppers:

  • 70% of Brazilians and 75% of Mexican consumers have already used AI tools to help with shopping
  • 64% of consumers in the region plan to use AI for gift inspiration
  • Nearly half of shoppers purchase from international sellers through social platforms
  • More than 80% express concerns about online payment fraud and identity theft

These trends are pushing payment networks and banks to combine AI-driven shopping experiences with stronger security technologies.

Security and Trust at the Core of AI Payments

While AI is making commerce more automated, security remains a central focus for payment networks.

Visa's research shows that fraud concerns are widespread across Latin America, with many consumers reporting that they or someone they know has experienced online payment scams in the past year.

To address this, payment providers are embedding AI directly into fraud detection systems. Visa has invested billions in machine learning technologies designed to detect suspicious transactions and block fraud before it reaches consumers.

In the context of agent-driven payments, these safeguards become even more important because AI systems are being trusted to initiate financial transactions.

The Rise of "Agentic Commerce"

The partnership between Santander and Visa is part of a broader movement toward agent-driven commerce, where AI systems autonomously handle tasks such as product discovery, price comparison, purchasing and payments.

In this model, consumers may eventually delegate routine shopping or financial tasks to intelligent assistants that operate continuously on their behalf.

Industry analysts believe such systems could significantly reshape the customer journey. Instead of browsing websites or navigating apps, users could simply define their preferences and allow AI agents to handle the rest.

A Glimpse Into the Future of Payments

The pilot initiative suggests that the payments industry is entering a new phase where AI becomes an active participant in commerce, rather than simply an analytics tool.

Banks provide the financial infrastructure. Payment networks provide secure transaction rails. AI agents orchestrate the decision-making.

Together, these technologies could redefine how transactions occur — especially in mobile-first markets like Latin America.

If the concept scales successfully, AI-driven payments may soon extend beyond shopping to include areas such as automated bill payments, business procurement, and financial management.

For Santander and Visa, the project represents an early step toward that future — one where AI agents become trusted intermediaries in everyday financial transactions.
